CSA Program at RTI
In 2002, the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) initiated a program to connect community-supported agriculture (CSA) farmers with employees of the Research Triangle Institute International (RTI), located in Research Triangle Park, NC.
As a host institution, RTI offered growers a pick-up location convenient to their CSA members, coordinated on-site opportunities for potential members to meet with CSA farmers, and used their internal communication network to promote the CSA concept and to provide advertising for each grower in the program.
The opportunity to market to this targeted audience has enabled several local producers to build new CSA programs and has expanded the membership of existing CSA enterprises.
Read about how this project was organized in the extension bulletin, Workplace Community Supported Agriculture: Connecting Local Farms to Local Employers (.pdf; opens in new window). Filled with ideas, examples and lessons learned from this workplace CSA pilot project, the bulletin is an excellent resource for farmers, businesses, extension agents and others considering starting a workplace CSA.
