| Debbie Roos Named Carolina Farm Stewardship Association Agent of the Year
Debbie Roos, Chatham County agricultural agent, received the Agent of the Year Award for North Carolina Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education Programs from Carolina Farm Stewardship Association. Roos is recognized nationally for her work promoting small farms and healthy farm ecosystems and for her award-winning Web site, Growing Small Farms. Carolina Farm Stewardship Association serves both North and South Carolina in its efforts to promote sustainable agriculture practices. |

Paul Mueller to Receive NCSU CALS-CNR Award for Service to Environment and Society
On October 22, Paul Mueller receive the distinguished NCSU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences - College of Natural Resources Award for Service to Environment and Society during the Borlaug Lecture.
This award is given to a tenure-track faculty member from any of NC State's colleges, jointly by the deans of CALS and CNR. This prestigious award will recognize exemplary service to Environment AND Society through any mechanism(s) of scholarly work.

Carlo Petrini Lecture Now Available!
CEFS was fortunate enough to host Carlo Petrini, the founder of the International Slow Food Movement for our Inaugural Sustainable Agriculture Lecture in May 2007. It was a significant undertaking, but we have finally secured the streaming video and transcript.
Although Mr. Petrini spoke in Italian, using an interpreter (Erika Lesser), the transcript reflects only the English translation.

CEFS Author Series Announces: John Ikerd
John Ikerd, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics, University of Missouri, Columbia
On Wednesday, November 7 (at 9am in Williams Hall) author John Ikerd will give a seminar as part of the CEFS Author Series. John was raised on a small dairy farm in southwest Missouri and received his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri . He worked in private industry for a time and spent thirty years in various professorial positions at North Carolina State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Georgia , and University of Missouri before retiring in early 2000. Since retiring, he spends most of his time writing and speaking on issues relate to the sustainability of agriculture.

Paul Mueller named the Interim
Assistant
Dean for International Programs
CEFS is pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Mueller has accepted the position of Interim Assistant Dean for International Programs
for NCSU on an interim basis effective September 1, 2007. Dr. Mueller has considerable international experience and has served on the college's International Programs Advisory Committee.

Eddie Pitzer Named Director
of
NCDA&CS Research Stations Division 
RALEIGH – Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler has appointed Eddie Pitzer of Fremont as director of the Research Stations Division at the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. His appointment is effective immediately.
Pitzer, a 30-year employee of the department, had been superintendent of the 2,200-acre Cherry Research Farm in Goldsboro since 1999. He succeeds Dr. Sandy Maddox, who retired Aug. 1.
“Eddie Pitzer understands the importance of research in helping North Carolina farmers meet the many challenges they face,” Troxler said. “He has the experience, management skills and vision to lead this crucial division as it assists our research community in developing new agricultural practices and technologies that benefit our farmers and citizens.”
The NCDA&CS Research Stations Division manages 18 agricultural research facilities across the state, operating in a unique partnership with N.C. State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and N.C. Agricultural & Technical State University. The stations conduct a variety of research into crops, new production techniques, conservation efforts and animal husbandry.
Pitzer joined the department in 1977 as assistant superintendent at Cherry Farm. He holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in livestock management and technology from the N.C. State University Agricultural Institute, and also studied business administration at Wayne Community College. He is a graduate of North Carolina’s Certified Public Manager Program.
Pitzer lives on a small farm with his wife, Bonnie. The couple has two sons, Josh and Andrew; a daughter-in-law, Amy; and a grandson, Eli. Pitzer is active in the community, serving as secretary/treasurer of the Wayne County Livestock Development Association Inc. and president of the Wayne County Cattleman’s Association. He also is a member of the Wayne County Extension Advisory Council.
His honors include a 2006 Commissioner’s Award for Excellence in Innovations, the 1998 State Friend of Extension Award and the Outstanding Service Award from the Wayne County Livestock Development Association Inc. in 1994.

Fueling the Farm Energy Conference, July 12th
The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) are pleased to announce “Fueling the Farm: Managing Energy Risks, Reducing Energy Costs, and Exploring Alternative Energy Sources” This day-long workshop will take place July 12 at Cherry Research Farm, a 2,000-acre research, extension, and education facility near Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Besides offering an overview of current and future energy use in agriculture, the workshop will show producers how to evaluate their energy saving options and how to finance and build renewable energy projects. Participants will tour energy-saving projects at Cherry Farm, and breakout sessions will cover several forms of renewable energy, as well as state and federal grant and loan opportunities. Hands-on demonstrations will be emphasized. Participants will have the opportunity to help build a small-scale biodiesel reactor, from parts that can be purchased for around $300.

Carlo Petrini Lecture May 23
Carlo Petrini, founder of the International Slow Food Movement , was the featured speaker of the CEFS Inaugural Sustainable Agriculture Lecture. Petrini spoke on the Slow Food philosophy of good, clean and fair food: that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should receive fair compensation for their work.
The lecture took place at 7 pm on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at the NCSU McKimmon Center with over 850 people in attendance.
