Extension Associate Horticulture
Location: Position will be housed at NC A&T State University in Greensboro, N.C.
Responsibilities: The Extension Associate will coordinate educational programs related to production of horticultural crops marketed through community-based food systems. The Associate will also assist Extension Specialists in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programming related to opportunities for limited-resource audiences in green industry agribusiness.
Specific responsibilities:
- Develop proposals and secure extramural funding for Extension Horticultural programs that address the needs and learning behaviors of beginning, small-scale, and limited resource growers.
- Assist both established agricultural producers and beginning farmers in developing market-driven, systems-integrated, and sustainable specialty crop and/or alternative enterprises that are appropriate for community-based food systems.
- Assist local government and community-based agencies and concerned individuals in the development of programs such as community gardening that address food security issues in low-income communities.
- Participate in training programs for Extension field faculty and community stakeholders that focus on sustainable agriculture, specialty crops (including organic and nursery enterprises) and food security and safety issues.
- Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with professional peers, organizations, institutions, and other agencies to produce innovative techniques that encourage users to adopt and/or implement system approaches for solving problems.
- Participate as a team member for other major Extension initiatives described in the Strategic Plan for Cooperative Extension.

Small Farm Unit Apprenticeship Opening
The Small Farm Unit at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems is currently seeking apprentices interested in learning about sustainable agriculture production, research, and education. No previous knowledge of sustainable farming is necessary. Apprentices will be able to learn from an assortment of activities related to organic farming, as well as play an active role in the small farm’s community involvement here in Wayne County. We are seeking apprentices for both short and long term durations, and are flexible on start/ end dates. We are able to offer both a small stipend and housing, in addition to food from the farm. Volunteers are both welcome and needed.
Location: The position is located at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ Small Farm Unit in Goldsboro, NC.
