CEFS Apprentice Application

Apprenticeships at the Small Farm Unit are opportunities to learn how to manage a small scale agriculture system of production, with connections in research and community awareness of local foods systems. High tunnels, Biointensive farming, small fruits, season extension, pasture-raised poultry and goats, and market vegetables are some of the production projects. Energy management and production of biofuels are a major interest. Apprentices will have a major role in agriculture literacy programs (Discover Ag) and in planning and executing the community garden at the Goldsboro Library.

A limited number of apprenticeships are available. They are of variable length. To completely understand the lifecycle of the farm, a year's commitment is preferred. Summer apprenticeships are typically from March through October, winter apprenticeships from November through February. Partial apprenticeships are considered. Independent projects are encouraged, but not required.

We offer a small stipend (currently $100/wk), housing with access to a kitchen, internet/web availability and free food from the farm. Apprentices may attend CEFS workshops free of charge, and may have the opportunity to participate in the formal intern teaching seminars.
